Archon Lucien as a younger angel, treading the line between righteousness & corruption.

--------

A character/scene I've been working on this past month. The character is inspired & based off of the angel Archon Lucien from Darksiders 2.

Modeled in 3ds Max, rendered with Octane, color-grading/post-work in Photoshop. Didn't get around to full texturing this time (again), and there are some unfinished areas that I may finish & update.

----

Surprised & honored by the DD. I appreciate the support, and input of the artist/viewers.

Very nice...bueno ¿puedo decirlo en español? ¿puedes entenederlo?
P.D: ¿Tienes ms imgenes parecidas? jajaja n.n

It was teh damn pool that corrupted him.
What keeps pissing me off is that all of the angels are so much "weaker" than the demons. WTF? Seriously.

Now that I'm learning 3ds Max, my appreciation for 3d work has expanded. Not only do I think this unfinished piece is great, it inspires the shit out of me. I can't wait to get home and practice practice practice!

I'm glad you enjoy the piece. =} (I agree that learning the ins & outs of something makes it more appreciable, at-least subjectively)

I'm not an expert, and that is why I need to ask: why did you render it with Octane?

Because I enjoy Octane's real-time interface & shaders, it provides relatively fast unbiased rendering using the GPU, and produces physically accurate results with ease. Not to mention it cost $50 when I originally bought it.

As for the noise.. that would be a byproduct of statistical variance, due to using an unbiased render kernel (PMC in this case). I could choose to let the render sit for another day or two to gather more samples, reducing the noise, but it doesn't bother me much. People complaining about it is secondary to me. (This part isn't directed specifically at you.. it's just for reference)

I'm still trying to figure out Daz Studio, but I am guessing the time spent rendering in 3ds Max is still very time consuming and complicated? (at least for me it is, I'm still trying though!)
Especially getting everything to fit properly and 'move' properly...so I can understand your work here on some degree. :) (I'm still a dummy though)

Also, congrats on the DD!

Now with that said, and hopefully this is helpful, something seems off here. I think it's just that you have a panoramic/landscape type scene, and it seems that your character is overwhelming the center. I think it should be a square type portrait layout, where you character can be seen in full, and not look cut off. Maybe a little more contrast with shadows, I know there are shadows there, but perhaps more about the base of the columns.

I don't think the landscape layout gives your character justice. I think the post work in photoshop left the quality a bit grainy. I don't know you well enough to know your style, so this could just be more subjective on your style. I'm not sure what Photoshop you use...but I think adjusting the lighting/tones/shadows/hues would work better and make things 'pop' in color.

I use CS5, and usually treat images with adjusting exposure, or using the curves tool. (There's a lot of other ways though as well, so if you have something like that play with the options. :) )

And my GOD those wings are AMAZING. X3

Thanks for sharing your thoughts regarding the lighting, tones and such.. that's something I tire on quite a bit, while experimenting. In the end I just let things go where they take me, and in this case I ended the post-work at a random point. I felt satisfied with the image, even though some may feel differently.

I haven't used Daz before.. I started off with 3ds Max & have stuck with it; apart from that I only use PS, Octane & Vray. I didn't render this image in 3ds Max either, but in Octane.

The graininess is a result of statistical variance, due to using an unbiased render technique (Populated Monte Carlo). I personally can't see the noise unless I zoom in, and even then I don't mind it. Some people despise it, which has been reiterated on any one of my images rendered with Octane. Those who enjoy perfectly clean, noiseless 3d art.. probably won't like my work.

Anyway, thanks for the critique and compliment. =}

You're very welcome! Thank you for explaining your process. I was correct in assuming this was your style then. Which, by all means, if it works for you go for it!

Now that I know what you're doing, or at least you explained what you did, it doesn't 'bug' me now. lol ;) Plus, like I said, I'm a total newb when it comes to 3d rendering. xP

You're welcome, and keep it up!

That is very egotistical of you. Just because you dislike this piece doesn't mean it isn't "real" art. A five year old's scribble can be art and there is no one who can say that what they do is better than anothers. It is all a matter of individual style. If you've offended just some random reader like me than I can't imagine how the artist feels about your rudeness. Please show some respect to others of the same trade, or if you can't control yourself just don't post it.

I appreciate your response Vale. Although I can't say I feel offended by his/her comment. I actually laughed because of how ridiculous it's worded (I don't say that with in any conceit). Anyway, it's good to be able to find some hint of humor in rude remarks. =]

I really liked the art direction in the game, but I just wished it were a bit longer. I think I might start a new game this weekend on apocalyptic difficulty.
